Functional Medicine is an evolution in the practice of medicine that shifts the disease centered focus of medical practice to a more patient centered focus that addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with “alternative or integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques; and prescribed combinations of drugs and botanical medicines, supplements and stress management techniques. Functional Medicine is essential because our society has experienced a sharp increase in the number of people who suffer from complex, chronic disease. This is compounded by the fact that most physicians treat acutely and are not adequately trained to assess the underlying cause of chronic complex disease or to apply intervention through nutrition, diet, and exercise to both treat and prevent illness in their patients. Functional Medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex disease. It is patient centered and promotes health as a positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease. FM considers factors in the patients history, physiology and lifestyle that can lead to illness and looks at the unique genetic make-up of each patient. Functional Medicine understands that the components of mind, body and spirit as well the physical and social environments of the patient work together to affect total function. Functional Medicine Physician’s believe that although individual genetics make you more susceptible to some diseases, your DNA is not an unchanging blueprint. Emerging research shows that your genes may be influenced by everything in your environment, as well as your experiences, attitudes, and beliefs. When you partner with your functional medicine physician you can take charge of your own health and change the outcome of disease.
